Основные выводы
- Отправить a STEP file, not just a PDF drawing — 3D CAD is what generates the toolpath, and without it, every quote is a rough estimate at best.
- Specify material grade and temper explicitly — “aluminum” is not a material callout; 6061-T6, 7075-T6, and 5052-H32 machine at completely different costs.
- Quote 2–3 quantity tiers — the unit price at 10 pieces vs. 100 pieces vs. 500 pieces follows a predictable curve, and seeing that curve tells you whether the supplier is set up for your volume.
- Only call out critical Допуски — every ±0.01 mm callout on a non-functional surface adds machining time that shows up on the invoice.
- Ask “what is driving cost on this part?” — a supplier who can answer this in one sentence is doing real DFM; a supplier who can’t is guessing at your price.
- Compare quotes by line item, not bottom line — material cost, setup, machining time, and finishing should each be visible so you can see where the spread comes from.
If you have ever uploaded a CAD file to an online platform and received quotes ranging from $12 to $38 for the same aluminum bracket, you already know the problem: Мы специализируемся на quotes are not commodity prices. Two shops looking at the same STEP file can land on numbers that differ by 2–3× — and neither is necessarily wrong. The spread comes from how each shop reads your drawing, what assumptions they make about your Допуски, and whether they are quoting to win the job or to make margin on it.
This guide gives you a repeatable RFQ checklist that removes the guesswork from both sides. Отправить the six pieces of information below and you will get quotes that are not only faster to arrive but actually comparable — so you are choosing between suppliers, not between interpretations of your drawing.
Why CNC Quotes Vary — and Why “Cheapest” Usually Isn’t
The formula every CNC shop uses is straightforward: Part Cost = Материал + (Machining Time × Hourly Rate) + Setup + Финишная обработкаing. What makes quotes diverge is how each term gets estimated — often from an incomplete RFQ.
| Cost Driver | What Makes It Vary | How to Control It |
|---|---|---|
| Материал | Grade choice (6061 vs 7075 = ~3× difference), stock size utilization, minimum order quantity from mill | Specify exact grade + temper. Ask if a nearby stock size reduces waste. |
| Machining time | Geometry complexity, number of setups, tolerance tightness, machinability of the alloy | Проектирование for fewer setups. Relax non-critical Допуски to ±0.1 mm. |
| Setup | Number of operations, fixture complexity, programming time | Consolidate features onto as few faces as possible. Quote multiple quantities — setup amortizes over volume. |
| Финишная обработкаing | анодирование Type II vs. III, порошковая покраска color and thickness, plating spec | Call out finish standard (MIL-A-8625 Type II), not just “anodize blue.” |
A common mistake: uploading a STEP file to an instant-quote platform, seeing a low number, and assuming that is the market price. Instant-quote algorithms make optimistic assumptions — standard Допуски, no special fixturing, in-stock material — that a human reviewer would flag. An instant quote is a starting point, not a binding offer. A supplier who responds with questions about your drawing is doing you a favor; they are closing the gap between what the algorithm assumed and what your part actually needs.
The 6-Element RFQ Checklist
Отправить all six and you will receive quotes that you can actually line up side by side. Miss one and every supplier fills the gap with their own assumption — and those assumptions won’t match.
1. 3D CAD File — STEP Is the Standard
A STEP file (.stp / .step) contains the solid geometry that CAM software reads to generate toolpaths. Without it, a shop is reverse-engineering your part from a PDF — slow, error-prone, and expensive. STL files (mesh format) work for quoting but not for machining; most shops will ask you to reОтправить as STEP. For a deeper comparison, see our guide to STL vs STP file formats for CNC manufacturing.
Лучше всего для: STEP AP203 or AP214 exported from your CAD package.
Avoid: Отправитьing only a PDF drawing and expecting a precise quote — at best you will get a ballpark with a wide margin built in.
2. Technical Drawing (PDF) — For Допуски, Threads, and Notes
The 3D model defines the geometry; the 2D drawing defines the requirements. It is where you call out critical dimensions with Допуски, thread specifications, surface finish callouts, and any notes about grain direction, burr removal, or marking. A good drawing follows the conventions we cover in our guide to technical drawings for metal fabrication.
3. Материал Grade, Temper & Quantity
“Алюминий” tells a shop nothing. “алюминий 6061-T6 plate, 25 mm thick” tells them what to order from the mill. Материал cost can swing 2–3× between grades (7075 vs 6061), and specifying the temper (T6, T4, H32) confirms the mechanical properties you expect. Our CNC aluminum grades guide walks through the decision for each alloy.
Quantity tier quoting: always request pricing at 2–3 quantities — for example, 10 / 50 / 200 pieces. The unit price curve shows you where setup cost gets absorbed and whether the supplier’s workflow is sized for prototypes or Производство.
4. Допуски — Only Where They Matter
The single fastest way to inflate a CNC quote is to tolerance every dimension on the drawing. A standard CNC shop holds ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) without breaking a sweat. Drop that to ±0.025 mm (±0.001″) and you have just added a Шлифовка or secondary operation — and the cost that goes with it. For a detailed breakdown, see our article on standard vs tight Мы специализируемся на Допуски.
Лучше всего для: Calling out 3–5 critical dimensions with GD&T datums. Let the rest float at standard shop tolerance.
Avoid: Block-tolerancing the entire drawing to ±0.05 mm — you are paying for precision the part не need.
5. Surface Финишная обработка — Имя the Standard
“Smooth finish” means nothing. Instead, write: “Anodize Type II, Class 2, black per MIL-A-8625” or “Ra 1.6 µm on mating surfaces, Ra 3.2 µm elsewhere.” Финишная обработкаing cost depends on the process (анодирование, порошковая покраска, plating, Пассивация), the thickness, and whether masking is required on threaded or press-fit features.
6. Осмотр & Documentation Requirements
If you need a . Мы составляем, PPAP Level 3, Сертификаты на материалы, or CMM dimensional reports, state it in the RFQ. These documents add cost but are non-negotiable for aerospace, medical, and automotive qualification. A supplier who can produce them on request is demonstrating a working quality system — not just an ISO certificate on the wall. See our Контроль качества guide for what each document means.
How Обработка на станках с ЧПУ Costs Break Down
| Component | Typical Share of Total | What Drives It |
|---|---|---|
| Материал | 15–30% | Alloy grade, stock size, waste factor (~30% for bar/plate) |
| Setup & programming | 10–25% | Number of operations, fixture complexity, one-time CAM |
| Machining time | 40–60% | Geometry, Допуски, material machinability, hourly rate |
| Финишная обработкаing | 5–20% | Процесс type, thickness, masking, batch minimum charges |
A part that takes 15 минут to machine at a shop rate of $60/hour costs $15 in spindle time. If the same part requires three setups, programming takes an hour, and the material is 7075 instead of 6061, that $15 becomes $60 before finishing. This is why comparing quotes by bottom line alone is misleading — one shop may have assumed one setup while another planned for three. Requesting a cost-driver breakdown in the quote makes the comparison honest.

Use this template for your next quote request. Fill in the bracketed fields and attach your STEP file and drawing.
- Проектирование status: [Производство-ready / prototype — minor changes possible]
- Files attached: STEP file (.stp) + PDF drawing
- Материал: [alloy grade + temper + form, e.g. алюминий 6061-T6 plate]
- Quantity tiers: [e.g. 10 / 50 / 200 pieces]
- через определённые интервалы: [list 3–5 features with Допуски; reference drawing bubble numbers]
- Обработка поверхности: [standard + color if applicable, e.g. Anodize Type II, black]
- Осмотр: [dimensional report / FAIR / PPAP / material cert — or “standard shop Осмотр”]
- Question for the supplier: “What is driving cost on this part, and what would you change first to reduce it?”
Красный флагs When Comparing CNC Quotes
- A quote returned in under an hour with zero questions. Either the shop is quoting an assumption, or they are desperate for work. Neither gives you a reliable part.
- One quote is 50% below the next-lowest. Check whether they read the material grade correctly, whether they included finishing, and whether they are quoting FOB their dock or DDP your door.
- No cost-driver breakdown when asked. A shop that cannot tell you what drives cost on your part is running a black box — and you will only learn what is inside when the invoice arrives.
- “We can make anything.” No single facility is excellent at 5-axis milling, Swiss turning, and обработке на ЧПУ simultaneously. A supplier who claims everything is likely brokering your order to subcontractors you will never speak to.
Real-world example: A US automation client sent a 6061 aluminum sensor bracket for quoting. One shop quoted $18/pc at 50 pcs; another quoted $42. The difference? The first assumed standard tolerance and one setup; the second included a tight flatness callout that required a second op and a Шлифовка pass. Both quotes were technically correct — the RFQ had not specified whether the flatness callout was functional or cosmetic. One clarifying email resolved a $1,200 difference on a $900 order.
Отправить a Complete RFQ, Get a Comparable Quote
Мы специализируемся на is not a commodity, but quoting it becomes predictable when you control the information you Отправить. A STEP file plus a drawing that calls out material, quantity tiers, critical Допуски, finish, and Осмотр requirements gives every supplier the same target to aim at. The quotes you get back will still differ — different shops have different equipment, different labor rates, and different backlog — but they will differ for real reasons you can evaluate, not because one shop guessed differently about what you wanted.
If you are preparing an RFQ and want a second set of eyes on the drawing before it goes out, BravoFabs includes a free DFM review with every quote — our engineers check Допуски, machinability, and material utilization and flag issues before any metal is cut.
