The spread comes from how each shop reads your drawing, what assumptions they make about your Toleranties, and whether they are quoting to win the job or to make margin on it.

Why CNC Quotes Vary — and Why “Cheapest” Usually Isn’t

“Aluminium” tells a shop nothing. “6061-T6 aluminium plate, 25 mm thick” tells them what to order from the mill. Materiaal cost can swing 2–3× between grades (7075 vs 6061), and specifying the temper (T6, T4, H32) confirms the mechanical properties you expect. Quantity tier quoting: always request pricing at 2–3 quantities — for example, 10 / 50 / 200 pieces. The unit price curve shows you where setup cost gets absorbed and whether the supplier’s workflow is sized for prototypes or Productie.

4. Toleranties — Only Where They Matter

The single fastest way to inflate a CNC quote is to tolerance every dimension on the drawing. A standard CNC shop holds ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) without breaking a sweat. Drop that to ±0.025 mm (±0.001″) and you have just added a Slijpen or secondary operation — and the cost that goes with it. Best voor: Calling out 3–5 critical dimensions with GD&T datums. Let the rest float at standard shop tolerance.
Avoid: Block-tolerancing the entire drawing to ±0.05 mm — you are paying for precision the part niet need.

5. Surface Afwerking — Naam the Standard

“Smooth finish” means nothing. Instead, write: “Anodize Type II, Class 2, black per MIL-A-8625” or “Ra 1.6 µm on mating surfaces, Ra 3.2 µm elsewhere.” Afwerkinging cost depends on the process (anodiseren, poedercoaten, plating, Passivering), the thickness, and whether masking is required on threaded or press-fit features.

6. Inspectie & Documentation Requirements

A part that takes 15 minuten to machine at a shop rate of $60/hour costs $15 in spindle time. If the same part requires three setups, programming takes an hour, and the material is 7075 instead of 6061, that $15 becomes $60 before finishing. This is why comparing quotes by bottom line alone is misleading — one shop may have assumed one setup while another planned for three.   • A quote returned in under an hour with zero questions. Either the shop is quoting an assumption, or they are desperate for work. Neither gives you a reliable part.
  • One quote is 50% below the next-lowest. Check whether they read the material grade correctly, whether they included finishing, and whether they are quoting FOB their dock or DDP your door.
  • No cost-driver breakdown when asked. A shop that cannot tell you what drives cost on your part is running a black box — and you will only learn what is inside when the invoice arrives.
  • “We can make anything.” No single facility is excellent at 5-axis milling, Swiss turning, and plaatmetaalbewerking simultaneously. A supplier who claims everything is likely brokering your order to subcontractors you will never speak to.

Real-world example: A US automation client sent a 6061 aluminum sensor bracket for quoting. One shop quoted $18/pc at 50 pcs; another quoted $42. The difference? The first assumed standard tolerance and one setup; the second included a tight flatness callout that required a second op and a Slijpen pass. Both quotes were technically correct — the RFQ had not specified whether the flatness callout was functional or cosmetic. One clarifying email resolved a $1,200 difference on a $900 order.
