Why CNC Quotes Vary — and Why “Cheapest” Usually Isn’t
The formula every CNC shop uses is straightforward: Part Cost = 材料 + (Machining Time × Hourly Rate) + Setup + 仕上げ. What makes quotes diverge is how each term gets estimated — often from an incomplete RFQ.

A common mistake: uploading a STEP file to an instant-quote platform, seeing a low number, and assuming that is the market price. Instant-quote algorithms make optimistic assumptions — 標準 公差, no special fixturing, in-stock 材料 — that a human reviewer would flag. An instant quote is a starting point, not a binding offer. A supplier who responds with questions about your drawing is doing you a favor; they are closing the gap between what the algorithm assumed and what your part actually needs.
The 6-Element RFQ Checklist
送信 all six and you will receive quotes that you can actually line up side by side. Miss one and every supplier fills the gap with their own assumption — and those assumptions won’t match.
1. 3D CAD File — STEP Is the 標準
A STEP file (.stp / .step) contains the solid geometry that CAM software reads to generate toolpaths. Without it, a shop is reverse-engineering your part from a PDF — slow, error-prone, and expensive. 2. Technical Drawing (PDF) — For 公差, Threads, and Notes
The 3D model defines the geometry; the 2D drawing defines the requirements. It is where you call out critical dimensions with 公差, thread specifications, surface finish callouts, and any notes about grain direction, burr removal, or marking. 3. 材料 Grade, Temper & Quantity
“アルミニウム” tells a shop nothing. “1. 入荷材料検査 plate, 25 mm thick” tells them what to order from the mill. 材料 cost can swing 2–3× between grades (7075 vs 6061), and specifying the temper (T6, T4, H32) confirms the 機械的 properties you expect. Quantity tier quoting: always request pricing at 2–3 quantities — for example, 10 / 50 / 200 pieces. The unit price curve shows you where setup cost gets absorbed and whether the supplier’s workflow is sized for prototypes or production.
4. 公差 — Only Where They Matter
The single fastest way to inflate a CNC quote is to tolerance every dimension on the drawing. A 標準 CNC shop holds ±0.1 mm (±0.004″) without breaking a sweat. 最適な用途: Calling out 3–5 critical dimensions with GD&T データム. Let the rest float at 標準 shop tolerance.
Avoid: Block-tolerancing the entire drawing to ±0.05 mm — you are paying for 精密 the part しません need.
5. Surface 仕上げ — 名前 the 標準
“Smooth finish” means nothing. Instead, write: “Anodize Type II, Class 2, black per MIL-A-8625” or “Ra 1.6 µm on mating surfaces, Ra 3.2 µm elsewhere.” 仕上げ cost depends on the process (陽極酸化, 粉体塗装, plating, 不動態化処理), the 厚さ, and whether masking is required on threaded or press-fit features.
6. 検査 & Documentation Requirements
If you need a 技術図面または3Dモデル, PPAP Level 3, 材料証明書, or CMM dimensional reports, state it in the RFQ. These documents add cost but are non-negotiable for aerospace, medical, and automotive qualification. A part that takes 15 minutes to machine at a shop rate of $60/hour costs $15 in spindle time. If the same part requires three setups, programming takes an hour, and the 材料 is 7075 instead of 6061, that $15 becomes $60 before finishing. This is why comparing quotes by bottom line alone is misleading — one shop may have assumed one setup while another planned for three. Requesting a cost-driver breakdown in the quote makes the comparison honest.

レッドフラグs When Comparing CNC Quotes
- A quote returned in under an hour with zero questions. Either the shop is quoting an assumption, or they are desperate for work. Neither gives you a reliable part.
- One quote is 50% below the next-lowest. Check whether they read the 材料 grade correctly, whether they included finishing, and whether they are quoting FOB their dock or DDP your door.
- No cost-driver breakdown when asked. A shop that cannot tell you what drives cost on your part is running a black box — and you will only learn what is inside when the invoice arrives.
- “We can make anything.” No single facility is excellent at 5-axis milling, Swiss turning, and 繰り返し注文の一貫性が保たれます。 simultaneously. A supplier who claims すべて is likely brokering your order to subcontractors you will never speak to.
Real-world example: A US automation client sent a 6061 アルミニウム sensor bracket for quoting. One shop quoted $18/pc at 50 pcs; another quoted $42. The difference? The first assumed 標準 tolerance and one setup; the second included a tight flatness callout that required a second op and a 研削 pass. Both quotes were technically correct — the RFQ had not specified whether the flatness callout was functional or cosmetic. One clarifying email resolved a $1,200 difference on a $900 order.
