When a machined part has a bore that must accept a precision bearing with 0.01 mm of clearance, a caliper won’t cut it. You need to know — with documented certainty — that the diameter, roundness, and position of that bore all fall within tolerance. That’s where a Programmer la comes in.
At BravoFabs, we use a Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex CMM capable of ±1,7 μm accuracy to inspect everything from simple brackets to complex aerospace components. This article explains how CMMs work, the different types available, how probe selection affects measurement results, and what you should look for in a CMM inspection report.
Qu'est-ce qu'une machine à mesurer tridimensionnelle (MMT) ?
A Coordinate Measuring Machine is a precision measurement device that determines the geometry of a physical object by probing discrete points on its surface within a three-dimensional coordinate system (X, Y, and Z axes). Unlike a caliper or micrometer — which measures one dimension at a time — a CMM captures the spatial relationship between features: the distance between two holes, the perpendicularity of a face to a bore, the flatness of a sealing surface.
In metal fabrication, CMMs serve three primary roles:
- Contrôle qualité: Verifying that manufactured parts match the engineering drawing or 3D CAD model
- First Article Inspection (FAI): Documenting every dimension on the first part from a new production run before full production begins
- Reverse engineering: Capturing the geometry of an existing part to create a CAD model when no drawing exists
Types de machines à mesurer tridimensionnelles
Not all CMMs are the same. The right type depends on part size, required accuracy, and whether the machine lives on the shop floor or in a climate-controlled inspection lab:
| Type | Conception | Idéal pour | Typical Équipement |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bridge CMM | Moving bridge over a fixed granite table | Small-to-medium precision parts (the most common type) | ±1.0 – 3.0 μm |
| Gantry CMM | Bridge supported by two elevated legs, workpiece stays fixed | Large parts (automotive body panels, weldments >1 m) | ±3.0 – 10.0 μm |
| Cantilever CMM | Probe arm extends from one side only, open on three sides | Long, narrow parts; easy operator access | ±3.0 – 8.0 μm |
| Horizontal Arm CMM | Horizontal probe arm, often dual-arm for simultaneous measurement | Large Tôle parts, automotive body-in-white | ±5.0 – 15.0 μm |
| Portable CMM | Articulated arm or laser tracker, no fixed table | On-site inspection, large Assemblages that can’t move | ±10.0 – 50.0 μm |
BravoFabs uses a bridge-type CMM — the Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex — which provides the best balance of accuracy and versatility for the precision CNC parts we produce daily.
Les champs obligatoires sont indiqués avec une MMT effectue une mesure
Le processus de mesure follows a logical sequence:
- Setup and alignment: The part is fixtured on the granite table. The CMM establishes a coordinate system by touching known reference surfaces (datums) — typically the same datums specified on the engineering drawing.
- Probe qualification: Before measuring, the probe stylus is calibrated against a precision reference sphere of known diameter. This compensates for stylus tip radius and any probe head misalignment.
- Program execution: The CMM follows a pre-written measurement program (or manual joystick control) to touch specific points on the part. For a bore, it might take 8-12 points around the circumference. For a flat surface, 5-9 distributed points.
- Data computation: The CMM software fits geometric features to the measured points — calculating diameter from a circle fit, flatness from a plane fit, position from coordinates relative to datums.
- Report generation: Each measured feature is compared to its nominal dimension and tolerance. Out-of-tolerance values are flagged in red. The final report is exported as PDF or CSV for the client.
Palpeurs CMM : Contact vs. Sans Contact
The probe is the CMM’s “finger” — and the choice of probe technology directly affects measurement speed, accuracy, and what features you can measure:
| Probe Type | Method | Speed | Équipement | Idéal pour |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Touch-Trigger | Ruby-tipped stylus makes physical contact at discrete points | Medium | ±0.5 – 2.0 μm | Standard dimensional inspection — holes, edges, planes |
| Scanning | Stylus maintains continuous contact while traversing the surface | Fast | ±1.0 – 3.0 μm | Complex contours, profile Tolérances, thousands of data points |
| Laser Line | Non-contact laser stripe projected onto surface, camera captures profile | Very Fast | ±5.0 – 15.0 μm | Tôle, soft materials, high-volume scanning |
| Vision/Optical | Camera with magnification captures 2D features | Fast | ±1.0 – 5.0 μm | Small features, edge detection, parts too delicate to touch |
For most CNC machined metal parts, touch-trigger probing remains the gold standard — it offers the highest accuracy and works reliably on reflective or dark surfaces that can confuse optical systems. At BravoFabs, we primarily use touch-trigger probes with ruby styli ranging from 1 mm to 5 mm diameter, selected based on the smallest feature that needs to be accessed.
Précision CMM et Étalonnage ISO 10360
CMM accuracy is defined by ISO 10360, the international standard for CMM acceptance and reverification testing. The key metric is MPE (Maximum Permissible Error) — the worst-case measurement error the machine is allowed to produce.
The two most common MPE specifications you’ll see on a Étalonnage certificate:
| Specification | What It Measures | Example Value |
|---|---|---|
| MPEE | Volumetric length measurement error — how accurately the CMM measures a known distance in 3D space | ±(1.7 + 3L/1000) μm |
| MPEP | Probing error — the scatter of repeated probe touches on a calibrated sphere | ±1,7 μm |
How to read the MPE formula: For a 100 mm feature length, MPEE = ±(1.7 + 3×100/1000) = ±2.0 μm. For a 500 mm feature, it becomes ±(1.7 + 3×500/1000) = ±3.2 μm. The error grows slightly with distance — which is why very long parts need gantry CMMs with different MPE characteristics.
Our Mitutoyo CRYSTA-Apex is calibrated quarterly to NIST-traceable standards per ISO 10360-2. The Étalonnage certificate is available for client review — you should always ask your manufacturer for this if you’re ordering tolerance-critical parts.
CMM vs. Mesure Manuelle : Pourquoi C'est Important
A skilled inspector with a micrometer can measure a diameter accurately. But can they measure the position of that diameter relative to Datums A, B, and C? Can they verify that a surface profile tolerance of 0.1 mm is met across a complex curved surface? That’s where CMM inspection becomes essential:
| Capability | Manual (Caliper/Mic) | CMM |
|---|---|---|
| Linear dimension (length, diameter) | ✅ ±0,02 mm | ✅ ±0.002 mm |
| GD&T position tolerance | ❌ Cannot measure directly | ✅ Computes from coordinates |
| Surface profile (complex curves) | ❌ Requires custom gauge | ✅ Scanning probe captures full contour |
| Flatness / parallelism | ⚠️ Indicator + surface plate | ✅ Plane fit from multiple points |
| Measurement speed (per feature) | 10 – 30 seconds | 2 – 5 seconds |
| Documentation | Handwritten or Excel | Automated report with CAD overlay |
| Operator skill dependence | High — results vary between inspectors | Low — program-driven, repeatable |
The bottom line: if your drawing has GD&T callouts (position Tolérances, profile Tolérances, runout) or tight Tolérances below ±0.05 mm, CMM inspection isn’t optional — it’s the only way to verify those requirements with documented evidence.

Points Clés
- A CMM doesn’t just measure size — it verifies spatial relationships. Position, profile, and GD&T callouts require coordinate measurement; calipers and Micromètres can’t do this.
- Bridge-type CMMs are the industry standard for precision machined parts up to ~1 m in size, offering the best accuracy-to-cost ratio.
- Touch-trigger probes remain the most accurate option for metal parts, with scanning probes adding speed for complex contours.
- Always ask for the Étalonnage certificate. ISO 10360 compliance and quarterly NIST-traceable Étalonnage are non-negotiable for tolerance-critical work.
- If your drawing has GD&T, you need CMM verification. Without it, those symbols on the drawing are just decoration — no one can prove the part actually meets them.
