UNC vs UNF vs 8UN:

Choosing the right thread series — UNC, UNF, or 8UN — is one of the first decisions in any mechanical design involving threaded fasteners or machined threads. The wrong choice can mean thread stripping under load, vibration loosening in service, excessive machining cost, or non-compliance with industry codes. This guide walks you through a systematic decision process with practical selection criteria.

At BravoFabs, we help industrial customers select the optimal thread series for their Применение — balancing function, cost, and manufacturability. This decision framework is based on ASME B1.1 standards and our experience machining thousands of threaded components.

  • Start with UNC unless you have a specific reason not to — it’s the cheapest, fastest, and most forgiving thread series for general Применениеs
  • Choose UNF when vibration is a concern, tensile strength must be maximized, or
  • Choose 8UN when your diameter exceeds 1″ and you’re designing for pressure containment, high torque, or API/ASME code compliance
  • Cost ranking (cheapest to most expensive): UNC → UNF → 8UN. The gap narrows significantly for custom-machined parts
  • Always check the governing code before finalizing — it may mandate a specific thread series regardless of your preference

Follow these five questions in order. The first “yes” determines your thread series:

Вопрос 1: Требуется ли серия резьбы по нормативному кодексу или стандарту?

Many industries have mandatory thread requirements. Check your governing document first:

  • ASME B16.5 (Pipe Flanges): Stud bolts for flanged joints use 8UN threads above 1″ diameter
Mandates 8UN for studs and nuts on flanged connections
  • ASME BPVC Section VIII (Сосуды под давлением): References B16.5 for flange bolting → 8UN
  • MIL-S-8879 (Aerospace): Specifies UNJ threads (see our complete 8UN specification reference) (controlled root radius) — a specialized variant of UNF/UNC
  • ASTM A193 (Alloy-Steel Bolting): Allows UNC, 8UN, and UNF depending on diameter and Применение

If YES → Use the mandated series. Stop here.
If NO → Go to Question 2.

Large-diameter threaded Сборки under high load benefit from the 8UN constant-pitch design. The coarse 0.125″ Глубина резьбы provides excellent Сопротивление срыву, and the constant 8 TPI means consistent torque-tension characteristics regardless of diameter.

If YES → Use 8UN.
If NO → Go to Question 3.

Oil & gas flanges, hydraulic cylinder end caps, turbine casing bolts, marine shaft couplings.
Avoid when: Диаметр is under 1″ (8UN not defined), or Устойчивость к вибрации is the primary concern.

UNF threads provide a larger tensile stress area than UNC at the same nominal diameter — typically 10-15% more. The finer pitch also provides better self-locking tendency under vibration because the shallower thread helix angle increases friction under clamp load.

UNC TPIUNF TPIUNC Tensile Area (in²)UNF Tensile Area (in²)UNF Gain
1/4″20280.03180.0364+14.5%
3/8″16240.07750.0878+13.3%
1/2″13200.14190.1599+12.7%
3/4″10160.33450.3730+11.5%

If YES → Use UNF.
If NO → Go to Question 4.

Engine components, aerospace fittings, hydraulic systems, rotating equipment.
Avoid when: Скорость сборки is critical, soft materials prone to cross-threading, or frequent disassembly is expected.

UNC’s coarse threads have deeper engagement per turn and lower Риск перекоса резьбы — critical for aluminum and other soft materials where a crossed fine thread can destroy the part in one misalignment. UNC also requires fewer turns to full engagement, making it the clear choice for high-volume assembly lines.

If YES → Use UNC.
If NO → Go to Question 5.

Лучше всего для: Алюминий brackets, brass fittings, plastic enclosures, mass-produced consumer products.
Avoid when: Vibration or tensile strength requirements override assembly convenience.

Question 5: No special requirements — what’s the default?

Use UNC. It is the universal default for good reasons: widest tooling availability, lowest machining cost, fastest assembly, and the most forgiving tolerance requirements. When in doubt and no other factor pushes you to UNF or 8UN, UNC is the safe, cost-effective choice.

From a Мы специализируемся на perspective, the cost difference between thread series depends on volume (for bolt substitution rules, see UNC vs 8UN interchangeability):

  • Prototype (1-10 pcs): Negligible difference. Setup time dominates — a single-point threading setup takes the same time regardless of TPI. Choose the correct series for function, not cost.
  • Small batch (10-100 pcs): UNC is ~10-15% faster than UNF due to fewer threading passes. 8UN on large diameters adds ~5-10% for the longer cutting path.
(1,000+ pcs): UNC is the clear cost winner. Rigid Нарезание резьбы is viable for UNC up to 3/4″, which is dramatically faster than thread milling. UNF and 8UN often require thread milling at larger sizes. Cost ranking: UNC (base) → UNF (+15-25%) → 8UN (+20-35%).

Which one is cheaper — UNC or 8UN? For diameters under 1″, only UNC is available — question doesn’t apply. For diameters 1-6″, UNC is cheaper for general-purpose fasteners (off-the-shelf bolts), but for custom-machined threaded components, the cost difference is small because both require CNC setup. The cost driver is material, diameter, and tolerance — not whether the thread is UNC or 8UN. Specify the correct series for your Применение; don’t compromise function to save a few percentage points on machining cost.

Example 1: Hydraulic Manifold Bolt (1/2″ diameter, 3,000 PSI, vibration)

Decision path: Q1: No code mandate → Q2: Under 1″ → Q3: Vibration YES → UNF. Choose 1/2-20 UNF for maximum tensile area and Устойчивость к вибрации in the hydraulic system.

Example 2: API 6A Wellhead Stud (1-5/8″ diameter, 10,000 PSI)

Decision path: Q1: API 6A mandates 8UN → 8UN. No further questions — code compliance overrides all other factors. Specify 1-5/8-8UN-2A per API 6A.

Decision path: Q1: No mandate → Q2: Under 1″ → Q3: No vibration concern → Q4: Алюминий + mass Производство → UNC. Choose #6-32 UNC for fast assembly and low Риск перекоса резьбы in aluminum.

Example 4: Steam Turbine Casing Bolt (3-1/2″ diameter, 500°C)

Decision path: Q1: No explicit mandate (customer spec says “UTS thread”) → Q2: Above 1″ + high temperature/pressure → 8UN. Choose 3-1/2-8UN-2A in ASTM A193 B16 for high-temperature creep resistance. The coarse 8UN pitch prevents thread seizure at operating temperature.
