At exactly 1″ diameter, both UNC and 8UN happen to use 8 TPI. This creates confusion — are they the same thread? They are not. UNC 1-8 is a single data point in a variable-pitch series, while 8UN 1″-8 is part of a constant-pitch series with its own tolerance and application standards. The thread geometry is identical at this one size, but the engineering context is completely different:

  • UNC 1-8 is used for general fasteners — bolts, screws, studs in structural applications
  • 8UN 1″-8 is typically specified for pressure-containing parts — flanges, Corps de vannes, wellhead components — where the 8UN designation signals compliance with API, ASME, or ASTM pressure vessel codes

If your drawing says “1-8 UNC,” any machine shop can make it.   • UNC threads are the cheapest to produce — fewer passes, standard tooling, and rigid Taraudage works for most sizes under 3/4″. Cycle time for a 1/2-13 UNC tapped hole in aluminum: ~3 seconds.
  • UNF threads require more care — the finer pitch means more turns per inch, and thread milling is often preferred over Taraudage for diameters above 1/2″ to avoid tap breakage. Cycle time adder: +20-30% vs equivalent UNC.
  • 8UN threads on large diameters are almost always single-point threaded on a CNC lathe or thread milled. The large diameter means the threading insert or mill must travel a longer helical path. Cycle time for a 4″-8UN external thread on a shaft: ~2-5 minutes depending on material and length.

For prototype quantities (1-10 pieces), the cost difference between thread series is negligible — setup time dominates. For production quantities (1,000+), UNC is the clear cost winner.
