Materials Used in Metal Brackets

Our metal brackets are crafted from high-quality materials to ensure durability and performance. We use Aluminum Alloys (AL5005, AL5052, AL5082, AL6061), Stainless Steel (SUS201, SUS301, SUS304, SUS316, SUS316L), Carbon Steel, Galvanized Steel, Cold Rolled Steel, Copper (Copper 101, Copper C110), and Bronze (Bronze 220, Bronze 510). Each material is carefully selected to meet specific design and structural requirements, providing optimal strength and reliability.

Custom Sheet Metal Bracket Specifications

Below are the working limits we build to. They are the same numbers our DFM review uses to flag a drawing before cutting, so you can check your own design against them — or send it over and we will do it for you.

1. Bracket type, material and tolerance

Bracket typeCommon materialWorking thicknessLaser cut toleranceBend toleranceTypical application
L / angle bracketAL 5052 / SS 304 / CRS1.5–4 mm (AL) · 1.5–6 mm (SS) · 1.5–8 mm (CS)±0.10 mm±0.10 mm single · ±0.20 mm doublePanel support, frame mounting
U / Z channel bracketCRS / SS 3041.5–6 mm±0.10 mm±0.10 mm · ±0.20 mm on multi-bendRail, stiffener, cable tray
Flat gusset / plateCRS / SS 304 / SS 3163–8 mm±0.10 mm (≤6 mm) · ±0.20 mm (6–12 mm)n/a — no formingStructural reinforcement
Enclosure / box bracketAL 5052 / galvanized steel1.0–3 mm±0.10 mm±0.10 mmElectronics, DIN rail, PCB stand-off
Welded bracket assemblyCRS / SS 3042–6 mm±0.10 mm±0.20 mm after weldingHeavy load, machine guarding

Cut tolerance applies to laser-cut features before forming. Thicker sheet widens the window — 6–12 mm stock runs ±0.15 mm at precision. Full table: laser cutting DFM guide.

2. Bend and feature limits

FeatureMinimumBest practiceWhat happens if you go under
Bend radius1 × t1.5 × tOrange peel, cracking on the outside of the bend
Hole diameter0.5 × t1 × tHole burns instead of cutting clean
Hole to bend line2.5 × t + R3 × t + RHole distorts and tears during forming
Slot to bend line4 × t + R5 × t + RSlot pulls open, bend angle drifts
Hole / slot to part edge1.5 × t2 × tEdge bulges, washer has nothing to seat on
Hole to hole2 × t2.5 × tWeb between holes deforms under load
Flange width4 × t5 × tPress brake cannot grip the flange reliably
Internal corner radius0.5 mm1 mmSharp corners burn and erode the nozzle
Kerf width (fiber laser)0.15 mm0.30 mmPress-fit joints end up loose or oversize

t = sheet thickness, R = internal bend radius. These limits are ISO 9013 / ISO 2768-based; if your drawing calls a different tolerance class, say so in the title block — see tolerance standards.

3. Surface finish and relative cost tier

*Relative cost index against as-cut (1.0). It compares process routes on the same part, not a price list — actual cost depends on quantity, masking, colour and spec. Options and comparability: surface finish services.

Bracket Types by Application, Mounting and Precision

By application

Electronics and control cabinets. Brackets here carry little load but must not distort a PCB or a DIN rail. Thin aluminium (1.0–2.0 mm) with ±0.10 mm cut tolerance is usually enough; the mounting holes matter more than the outline. The same logic applies to the sheet metal enclosures they sit inside.

Structural frames and machinery guarding. Load path runs through the bends, so thickness and bend radius do the work — 3–6 mm carbon steel or 304 stainless, with flange widths at 4× thickness or more. Welded assemblies are common here; see welding and assembly.

Panel, signage and cladding supports. Large flat brackets where appearance matters: powder coating or anodizing, and hole positions driven by the existing building or machine interface rather than by the part itself.

Retrofit and repair brackets. No drawing exists, only the broken part in hand. We measure it, rebuild the model and cut a replacement — the machining side handles anything the laser cannot, such as tapped bosses or turned spacers.

By mounting method

Through-bolt with clearance holes. Cheapest and most forgiving: a 0.3–0.5 mm clearance over the bolt diameter absorbs tolerance stack-up across the assembly, so put the precision where it is measured, not where it is bolted.

Blind rivet or rivnut. One-sided access, permanent joint. Rivnuts need back-side clearance for the collapsed body plus a flat seating face — keep them at least 2× thickness from an edge or the sheet will pull through.

Weld-on tab. Strongest and stiffest, but it locks the geometry: weld distortion moves the bracket after machining, so tolerances must be released on the assembly, not on the flat part.

Clip or adhesive-mounted. For light loads and non-structural panels. Adhesive needs a clean, flat, coated surface — specify the finish first, because paint and anodizing change the bond.

By material

Aluminium 5052 / 6061. Best strength-to-weight for brackets, naturally corrosion resistant, anodizes well. 5052 forms better; 6061 machines better if the bracket also needs tapped holes. Laser limit 4 mm.

Stainless 304 / 316. Hygiene, marine and food equipment. Work-hardens as it cuts and forms, so keep bend radii generous and expect more springback than mild steel. 316 where chlorides are present. Laser limit 6 mm — more on our stainless steel fabrication page.

Carbon steel (CRS). Highest stiffness per euro and the default for hidden structure — provided it is plated or painted. Bare CRS in a humid plant will rust at the cut edges within weeks.

Galvanized steel. Outdoor, HVAC and electrical work. The zinc coating protects the face, but every laser-cut edge is bare steel: specify a zinc-rich touch-up or a post-finish on parts that see weather.

By precision tier

Standard tier. ISO 2768-mK in the title block, laser ±0.10 mm, single bend ±0.10 mm. This covers most brackets and is the cheapest route — there is no reason to ask for tighter unless a mating part demands it.

Precision tier. ±0.05 mm on thin sheet, tighter bend control with dedicated fixturing, and first-article inspection. It roughly doubles the process time, so it belongs on locating features only: put the tight tolerance on the two holes that align, and general tolerance on everything else. How to write that on a drawing is covered in tolerance standards.

Verification. Standard tier ships with dimensional report on request; precision tier with CMM data on the critical features — see quality control. Above roughly 5,000 pieces a year, stamping usually beats laser cutting per part once tooling is amortised; the full process comparison sits on the sheet metal fabrication page.
